🇺🇦 Ukrainian citizens: UKR status and temporary protection

If you have a PESEL number with UKR status, your stay in Poland is legal until 4 March 2027. The extension is automatic – no application needed.
The European Union extended temporary protection until 4 March 2028. New protection since 5.08.2026 is only for people who have fulfilled their military obligations; this does not apply to people protected continuously since before 4.08.2026.
Note – not final: UdSC pages (as of 26.10.2026) still say UKR status is valid until 4.03.2027. There is no clear information yet on how Poland will implement the extension to 2028. Follow announcements of the Office for Foreigners (UdSC).

💻 Residence applications online only (MOS)

Since 27 April 2026, applications for temporary residence, permanent residence and EU long-term residence are filed electronically only, in the MOS system. Paper applications filed after 26.04.2026 are not considered.
Log in via login.gov.pl. Sign with profil zaufany (trusted profile), a qualified signature or a personal signature. The system is free.
You get an UPO receipt and a certificate that replaces the passport stamp. The office may invite you to give fingerprints.

🔢 PESEL number for Ukrainian citizens

Apply in person at any urząd gminy (municipal office). It is free. You collect the confirmation at the same office.
Bring: a colour photo 35×45 mm and the application form (available at the office). Children under 12 do not give fingerprints.
New passport? Update your data at the municipal office – free, your PESEL does not change. Without a valid passport in the register you may lose UKR status.

🪪 CUKR residence card

You apply online only, in the MOS system, from 4 May 2026 to 4 March 2027.
Conditions: an active PESEL UKR (on the application date, on 4 June 2025 and on the day the card is issued) and at least 365 days with UKR status.
Fee: PLN 340 for the permit + PLN 100 for the card.
Once you get CUKR, you lose benefits linked to UKR status.

💼 Work

A Ukrainian citizen staying legally can work without a permit. The employer must notify the county labour office via praca.gov.pl within 7 days of the start of work.
Citizens of other countries usually need a work permit or a declaration – ask the helpline.

🩺 Doctors and NFZ

Since 5 March 2026 the special healthcare rules of the Ukraine assistance act no longer apply.
Free care for people with temporary protection who are insured (e.g. through work), children under 18, and women who are pregnant, in labour or postpartum.
In a sudden threat to health or life, everyone with PESEL UKR gets the necessary care. NFZ helpline: 800 190 590.

🏫 School for children

Children aged 7–18 attend Polish public schools for free, on the same terms as Polish children.
Since 1 September 2026 pupils from Ukraine follow the general rules for foreign pupils: extra free Polish lessons (at least 2 hours a week, up to 24 months), help from a person who speaks their language (up to 12 months), catch-up classes and preparatory classes.
